When Regret Meets Chance: Thoughts on "Car of Dreams"

Car of Dreams” by M.D. Smith is a fantasy story about an old man who finds his long-lost car when time suddenly begins to move backward.

The main character, Randy Jenkins, depicted as a lonely old man trapped in his dull routine for years. The sense of lost love and deep regret is clearly reflected in his character. Whereas, Marilyn is Randy’s old car that represents his love and the dreams he once lost.

Randy’s past love, Martha Jo, is a beautiful young woman with blonde curls and a soft voice. She represents Randy’s journey of love.

The story takes place in a small American town, shifting between the present day and the 1950s through a magical sense of time travel.

The story follows Randy Jenkins, an old man living a lonely and regretful life. One day, he unexpectedly discovers his old car, Marilyn, which he once loved dearly in his youth. As he drives it again, something magical happens, time begins to move backward.

With each mile the odometer rolls in reverse, Randy and his surroundings grow younger. He gradually finds himself back in the 1950s, the golden days of his youth. There, he meets Martha Jo, his past love, and realizes he has been given a second chance to relive his life and correct his past mistakes.

In the end, Randy chooses to disconnect the odometer, stopping the backward flow of time. He decides to stay in that moment — young again, reunited with Martha Jo, and free from regret.

Reading this story really touched my heart. Randy Jenkins's loneliness and regret felt so real, but what inspired me most was his choice to change when life gave him another chance. He truly made the most of it.

I highly recommend this story to read in your spare time. It’s simple yet inspiring, and it reminds us to appreciate the moments we have.
